MJ Sanqui is a Filipino artist, writer, & designer from Western NC currently living and working on unceded Narragansett land, colonially known as Providence, RI.
Their practice exists across intersections between experimental publishing and contemporary craft; they fluidly appropriate print, paper, photography, text, video, and the book form to explore the entropic entanglements of personal and collective histories, ruderal ecologies, and remediated archives. They are also currently experimenting with weaving and computational mediums to further think through the sedimentary interstices of our natural, built, and digital environments and the nebulous constructions of queer and Brown identity. MJ is often preoccupied with questions about the meaning imbued in material and the possibilities of anticapitalist techno-craft worldbuilding.
MJ is one of the 2024 - 2025 artists in residence at the Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve on Prudence Island. They are a former resident and current member of the Binch Press / Queer.Archive.Work studio, a co-organizer of the Queer/Trans Zine Fest, and a triple water sign.
